WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Community Grieves After Tragic Crash Claims Two Lives on Thursday Morning
WINSTON-SALEM — A devastating Thursday morning crash has left the Winston-Salem community in mourning after two lives were tragically lost in a head-on collision that police say occurred under unclear circumstances.
According to a press release from the Winston-Salem Police Department, the fatal crash happened around 8:42 a.m. on Shattalon Drive, when 68-year-old Darlene Schuwan Hauser was driving south in a 2016 Ford Escape. For reasons that remain under investigation, Hauser’s vehicle crossed the double yellow line and entered the northbound lane, striking a 2008 Toyota Camry head-on.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, identified as 43-year-old Marcus D. Whitaker, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Darlene Hauser was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced deceased.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and authorities say that no passengers were in either car.
A Sudden and Shocking Loss
Family members and friends of both victims are grappling with the shock of losing their loved ones so suddenly.
Marcus Whitaker was remembered by neighbors and coworkers as a hard-working father of two who worked as a contractor and was well known in the local community for his kindness and integrity. “He was the kind of man who would stop to help a stranger change a tire,” said a longtime friend. “He always put others first.”
Darlene Hauser, a retired school administrator, was known for her decades of service to the community, particularly her work mentoring young teachers and her involvement in church programs. Those close to her described her as “fiercely independent, warm-hearted, and full of life.”
Investigation Ongoing
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is actively investigating the cause of the crash. At this stage, investigators say it is too early to determine whether medical issues, distraction, speed, or another factor led to Hauser’s vehicle veering into oncoming traffic.
Police have asked any potential witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to come forward. Traffic in the area was rerouted for several hours on Thursday morning as investigators worked the scene.
Community in Mourning
As news of the double fatality spread, an outpouring of grief and condolences began flowing in from across the Winston-Salem community. A small memorial of flowers and candles has been placed near the crash site, with neighbors stopping by throughout the day to pay their respects.
“This is a tragic reminder of how fragile life is,” said one local pastor. “We’re all mourning today—this community has lost two good people.”
Local grief counselors have been made available through several community organizations, and both families have asked for privacy as they process the immense loss.
Traffic Safety Reminders
In the wake of the crash, officials are reminding drivers to remain vigilant on the road, to avoid distractions, and to seek medical attention if they feel unwell behind the wheel. While no conclusions have been drawn about the cause of Thursday’s tragedy, police emphasized the importance of regular vehicle checks and maintaining awareness at all times.
Funeral Arrangements Pending
Funeral arrangements for both victims are pending and will be announced by their respective families in the coming days. Community members wishing to support the families are encouraged to reach out to local churches and organizations coordinating meal trains and memorial efforts.
As the Winston-Salem community mourns the loss of Darlene Hauser and Marcus Whitaker, their memories will live on through the many lives they touched.
