West River Community Mourns Beloved Annapolis Couple Donald and Anne Allen After Tragic Crash
October 20, 2025 | West River, MD — The close-knit and typically serene community of West River is reeling from heartbreak following the tragic deaths of Donald and Anne Allen, a cherished couple from nearby Annapolis, who lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash late Sunday night.
According to Maryland State Police, the fatal crash occurred just before midnight on Sunday, October 19, along a rural stretch of Muddy Creek Road — a winding, tree-lined roadway that runs through West River and is known for its scenic beauty, but also for its challenging curves, especially at night.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a badly damaged vehicle, which had veered off the road and struck a large tree. The driver, identified as 68-year-old Donald Allen, and his wife, 66-year-old Anne Allen, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say neither alcohol nor foul play is suspected, and preliminary findings point to the possibility of driver error or a medical emergency. Investigators are awaiting the results of autopsies and vehicle inspections to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The sudden and tragic loss of the Allens has sent shockwaves through Annapolis and the greater Anne Arundel County area. Longtime residents and local officials alike have spoken out to express their sorrow and share their memories of the couple, who were widely respected for their warmth, generosity, and deep commitment to the community.
“They were the kind of people who gave without ever expecting anything in return,” said longtime neighbor Karen Fitzsimmons, who recalled Anne’s passion for local gardening projects and Donald’s quiet but steadfast support of veteran organizations. “Their kindness radiated. It’s hard to imagine our community without them.”
Donald Allen was a retired Navy officer who had served his country for over 25 years before transitioning into civilian work in maritime logistics. A man known for his integrity and leadership, he was also an active member of the American Legion and mentored younger veterans as they adjusted to post-military life. Anne, a retired school librarian, was well known throughout the Anne Arundel County Public Schools system, where she had worked for more than two decades. She remained an enthusiastic supporter of literacy programs and volunteered regularly at the public library in Annapolis.
Together, the Allens were often seen at community events, farmers’ markets, and church functions. They were known for their quiet affection for one another, their warm greetings, and their unshakable presence in the lives of neighbors and friends.
“They were a team in every sense of the word,” said Rev. Melissa Jordan of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where the couple were longtime members. “Donald and Anne embodied love, service, and faith. Their loss leaves a tremendous void, not just in our congregation, but in the very heart of this community.”
The tragic crash has prompted fresh concerns among West River residents about road safety, particularly on the less illuminated, narrow stretches of county roads. Muddy Creek Road, in particular, has seen several accidents over the years, leading to calls for improved signage, lighting, and possibly the installation of guardrails in some sections.
In response to the incident, Anne Arundel County Councilwoman Lisa Brice issued a statement: “We are devastated by the loss of Donald and Anne Allen. As we extend our deepest sympathies to their family, we must also ensure our roads are as safe as possible for all drivers. Discussions are already underway with transportation officials to evaluate potential improvements in the area.”
The Allens are survived by their two adult children, Sarah and Matthew, and five grandchildren. In a written statement, the family expressed both grief and gratitude for the outpouring of support they’ve received.
“Our parents were extraordinary people — humble, loving, and deeply rooted in service. We are shattered by their loss but comforted by the love that surrounds us. They touched so many lives, and their legacy will live on in the values they taught us and the community they helped build.”
A public memorial service for Donald and Anne Allen will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation or to the Wounded Warrior Project, causes close to both of their hearts.
