Tragic Plane Crash in Montana Wilderness Claims Lives of Alabama Father and Daughters
Powell County, MT – October 19, 2025 — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in the rugged wilderness of northern Montana this weekend, as authorities confirmed that the pilot and two passengers aboard a missing small aircraft have been found dead following a crash in a remote part of Powell County.
The Powell County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday that the wreckage was discovered in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, one of the most isolated and challenging terrains in the state. The victims have been identified as Mark Anderson, a seasoned pilot from Huntsville, Alabama, and his two daughters, Lainey and Ellie Anderson.
The family had been en route to Montana when their plane vanished from radar late Friday. A report of a possible downed aircraft was received Friday afternoon, prompting an extensive search operation involving local, state, and federal agencies. The final known coordinates placed the plane in a densely forested area of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
An air search launched from Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls continued into the night but was hampered by worsening weather conditions. Poor visibility, wind, and rugged terrain delayed efforts by both aerial and ground rescue teams. According to officials, the wreckage was located around 11:30 a.m. Mountain Time on Saturday.
Responders from the Powell County Coroner’s Office, Missoula County Search and Rescue, and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) were dispatched to the crash site, where all three individuals were sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
A Devastated Community Back Home
Back in Huntsville, Alabama, the news has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly at Monte Sano Baptist Church, where the Anderson family were active members. In the hours following the plane’s disappearance, the church had rallied prayer support for Mark, Lainey, Ellie, and their beloved dog Stella, who was also aboard the flight.
“Mark is an experienced pilot, and we’re holding onto hope that he made a safe landing in a remote area,” the church had written on Facebook before the tragic confirmation came.
Church leaders later shared their sorrow in a public statement, offering condolences to Mark’s wife, Misty Anderson, and calling on the community to continue lifting the family in prayer.
“Our hearts are broken. We prayed for a miracle, and now we pray for peace and strength for Misty and the extended Anderson family,” the statement read.
A Respected Father and Experienced Pilot
Mark Anderson was widely known in the Huntsville area as a man of deep faith, family devotion, and exceptional skill as a pilot. Friends and neighbors describe him as a loving father who often traveled with his daughters on outdoor adventures and was deeply involved in his church and community.
“Mark was a pillar in our church family — dependable, kind, and faithful,” one church member shared. “Lainey and Ellie were sweet, joyful girls, and their absence will be felt beyond words.”
According to local sources, Mark had logged many flight hours and was familiar with mountainous terrain, making the loss even more painful and perplexing to those who knew his aviation background.
FAA and NTSB Launch Crash Investigation
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have taken over the investigation. Preliminary findings are expected in the coming days, though a full report may take several weeks or months to complete.
Investigators will examine weather data, flight path information, communication records, and wreckage from the site to determine what led to the fatal crash. Given the mountainous and remote location, recovery and investigation efforts will be complex and may face continued delays due to unpredictable weather.
A Call for Compassion
In the face of unimaginable grief, community members both in Montana and Alabama are coming together to support the Anderson family and honor the lives lost.
A memorial service is expected to be planned in Huntsville in the coming week, though arrangements have not yet been formally announced. Friends and supporters have begun sharing memories and condolences online, using social media to celebrate the lives of Mark, Lainey, and Ellie.
“We’re leaning on faith right now, even in our sorrow,” one friend posted. “They were a beautiful family, and they will never be forgotten.”
As the investigation continues, the Andersons’ tragic passing serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers of remote air travel and the fragility of life — even for the most skilled pilots.
In memory of Mark, Lainey, and Ellie Anderson.
May their spirits soar higher than the skies they loved.
