Tragic Loss: Family and Friends Confirm Identities of Two Young Girls Killed in Horizon Biofuels Plant Explosion

On July 29, 2025, a devastating explosion at the Horizon Biofuels plant in Fremont, Nebraska, tragically claimed the lives of two young girls and their father. The victims have been identified as 12-year-old Hayven Danielson, 8-year-old Fayeah Danielson, and their father, 32-year-old Dylan D. Danielson. The explosion, believed to have been ignited by a dust fire, occurred around noon and led to the collapse of part of the facility, making rescue operations perilous. The fire continued to burn even after overnight rain, complicating recovery efforts.

The Victims: Remembering Hayven and Fayeah

Hayven and Fayeah were at the plant with their father, waiting for him to finish his shift so they could attend a doctor’s appointment. Their names were confirmed by family and friends, who described them as vibrant and full of life. Hayven was remembered as a “bright ray of sunshine,” while Fayeah was noted for her ability to “brighten even the darkest days.” Both girls were active in their communities, with Fayeah being a student at Shelby-Rising City Schools and Hayven attending Wahoo Public Schools.

The Tragedy Unfolds

The explosion at Horizon Biofuels, which manufactures wood pellets and animal bedding, was reportedly caused by a dust fire ignited by accumulated wood dust in the plant’s elevator tower. The blast destroyed part of the facility, forcing emergency crews to battle hazardous conditions for over 24 hours to recover the victims. The fire’s intensity and the structural collapse made initial rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Community Response and Support

The Fremont community has rallied around the families affected by this tragedy. GoFundMe accounts have been set up to support the families of Hayven and Fayeah, with tributes highlighting their personalities and the impact they had on those around them. Local schools and organizations, including Wahoo Public Schools and the Wahoo Kids Wrestling Club, have expressed their condolences and offered support to the grieving families.

Investigations and Safety Concerns

The Nebraska Fire Marshal’s agency has completed its initial investigation into the plant explosion, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also conducting an investigation. Earlier this year, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy investigated an air quality complaint at Horizon Biofuels and found wood dust beyond the property line. Additionally, Horizon Biofuels was issued penalty fines by OSHA in 2012 for four “serious violations,” including a lack of training and communication on workplace hazards and machine maintenance.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of Hayven, Fayeah, and Dylan has left the Fremont community in mourning. Local officials, including Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg and Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, have expressed their condolences and pledged ongoing support as investigations into the cause continue. The explosion serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with industrial facilities and the importance of rigorous safety measures to protect workers and their families.
