Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash in Palmdale Claims Life of Chelsea Jewkes, 31; Vigil Planned in Her Memory

PALMDALE, Calif. — A devastating head-on collision in Palmdale Friday afternoon has left one woman dead, several others injured, and an entire community reeling. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the woman killed in the crash as 31-year-old Chelsea Jewkes, a resident of the Antelope Valley.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue N and 22nd Street West, prompting a rapid response from local authorities and emergency medical personnel.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s Antelope Valley station, the crash involved two vehicles: a black Mercedes-Benz and a silver Lexus. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found both cars heavily mangled from the violent impact. The Lexus had come to rest on the dirt shoulder on the southbound side of Avenue N, while the Mercedes was left disabled sideways in the middle of the roadway.

Chelsea Jewkes, who was driving the Lexus, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, whose identity has not yet been released, suffered critical injuries and was transported via ambulance to Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster, where they remain under medical care.

Suspect Fleeing From Prior Crash

In a shocking twist, CHP officials have confirmed that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was fleeing the scene of a previous crash on the freeway when the fatal collision occurred. According to CHP Sgt. Deonte Hall, the suspect was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds westbound on Avenue N, before losing control and slamming head-on into Jewkes’ Lexus.

Following the crash, both the driver and the passenger of the Mercedes fled the scene on foot. Thanks to a swift response by law enforcement, both suspects were apprehended within minutes of the collision. Authorities confirmed that both were injured and are now receiving medical treatment under police custody. Charges are pending, and investigators are working to determine whether drugs, alcohol, or speed played a role in the incident.

Multiple Victims Affected

In addition to the fatality and critical injuries sustained by those in the Lexus, two more victims were reported at the scene:

  • One woman, believed to have been involved in the earlier freeway collision, was transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.

  • A pregnant woman, who was sitting in her own car when flying debris from the crash struck her vehicle, was left visibly shaken. Out of caution, she was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and monitoring.

Authorities say this was a multi-layered collision event, involving several scenes and a series of reckless decisions that led to a completely avoidable tragedy.

Remembering Chelsea Jewkes

Chelsea Jewkes is being remembered as a vibrant, kind-hearted woman whose life was cut tragically short by someone else’s recklessness. Friends and family describe her as someone who was deeply loved, hard-working, and always quick with a smile or a helping hand. She was reportedly on her way home from work when the crash occurred.

“Chelsea had a light about her that drew people in,” said a friend on social media. “She didn’t deserve this. No one does.”

A candlelight vigil is planned for tonight in Chelsea’s honor. Friends, family, and members of the community are expected to gather at the crash site on Avenue N, near 22nd Street West, to lay flowers, light candles, and share memories of a life that ended far too soon.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation remains active and is being led by the California Highway Patrol, with assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and local emergency response teams. Authorities are urging any witnesses to the crash—or the earlier freeway collision—to come forward with information.

“We know that someone out there saw something,” said Sgt. Hall. “If you witnessed any part of the events leading up to this tragedy, please contact CHP’s Antelope Valley office. Even the smallest detail could help bring justice for Chelsea and her loved ones.”

How to Help

The Jewkes family has not yet announced any fundraising efforts, but community members have expressed interest in helping with funeral expenses and support for the victim’s loved ones. Details are expected to be released in the coming days.

In the meantime, the community is being asked to keep Chelsea’s family and all those affected in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP Antelope Valley Station at (661) XXX-XXXX or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers.

Rest in peace, Chelsea Jewkes.
May your memory be a light in the darkness, and may justice be served in your name.
