Tragedy in San Antonio: Mother Arrested After Two Young Children Found Deceased in Vehicle
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A heartbreaking incident has rocked the San Antonio community after two young siblings were found dead inside a vehicle on Saturday afternoon. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) confirmed the grim discovery and announced the arrest of the children’s mother, 28-year-old Tiona Lasaisha Islar, who faces serious charges related to the tragic deaths.
Tragic Discovery at Far West Bexar County Home
According to BCSO Sheriff Javier Salazar, deputies responded to a distress call at approximately 3:00 p.m. concerning a potential hot car-related emergency involving children. The call originated from a residence near the intersection of Chancery Gate and Appleton Way in Far West Bexar County.
Upon arrival, deputies found two siblings, a 3-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother, unresponsive inside a vehicle parked on the property. Sheriff Salazar detailed how deputies immediately attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, simultaneously performing them on both children while awaiting Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Despite the first responders’ best efforts, both children were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Mother Arrested Amid Questions Surrounding Timeline and Circumstances
The children’s mother, Tiona Lasaisha Islar, who discovered the children in the vehicle, was taken into custody the same day. She was arrested on two counts of Injury to a Child Serious Bodily Injury/Death, charges that reflect the severity and suspected negligence associated with this tragedy.
During initial interviews, Islar told deputies she last saw her children alive around 10 a.m. inside the home, when she was going to sleep, and had not seen them again until she found them in the vehicle hours later.
However, Sheriff Salazar expressed significant doubts about the mother’s account. “There are several inconsistencies about what unfolded,” he said in a press briefing. “Something is not adding up about this case.” The sheriff’s office is continuing to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including possible neglect or intentional harm.
Child Protective Services Responds
Child Protective Services (CPS) was immediately notified and arrived at the scene to assess the situation and provide support. Authorities have confirmed that CPS is working with the family and will be involved in any future proceedings regarding custody and care of other relatives or children connected to the case.
Cause of Death Under Investigation
Currently, investigators are awaiting the results from the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is conducting autopsies to determine the precise cause and manner of death of the two children. These findings will be pivotal in establishing whether the deaths resulted from prolonged heat exposure, accidental circumstances, or potentially other factors.
Hot Car Deaths: A Nationwide Concern
This tragic event adds to a distressing national trend in which children suffer fatal consequences after being left in hot vehicles. Even on relatively mild days, temperatures inside parked cars can rapidly reach dangerous levels, posing a severe risk to young children who are unable to protect themselves.
Authorities and safety advocates routinely stress the importance of never leaving children unattended in vehicles, especially during warmer months, and recommend steps such as leaving reminders, keeping car doors locked, and always checking the backseat before leaving a vehicle.
Community and Family in Mourning
The community surrounding the Chancery Gate area has been left shaken by the heartbreaking news. Neighbors expressed profound sorrow and disbelief that such a tragedy could occur in their neighborhood.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” said one neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. “Our hearts go out to the children and their family. It’s a reminder of how fragile life is and how important it is to look out for each other.”
Legal Proceedings Pending
As investigations continue, Tiona Lasaisha Islar remains in custody on charges related to the deaths of her children. The legal process is expected to unfold in the coming weeks, with prosecutors potentially filing additional charges depending on findings from medical and law enforcement investigations.
Sheriff Salazar emphasized the seriousness of the case: “We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for these children who lost their lives far too soon.”
What Happens Next?
Bexar County law enforcement and Child Protective Services will continue working closely to determine all aspects of the case, including any other potential risks to family members. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report concerns about child welfare to local authorities.
This case stands as a somber reminder of the dangers children face and the responsibilities borne by caregivers. As the investigation unfolds, the hope is that answers will bring some measure of justice and that awareness can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
