Teen Fatally Shot at Avalon Fishing Pier Identified as Zane Hughes; Suspect in Custody

A tragic shooting occurred on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the Avalon Fishing Pier in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, resulting in the death of a teenager and the hospitalization of another. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the popular Outer Banks fishing destination. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, finding two victims with gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment .

Eyewitnesses reported that both victims appeared to be high school students. One was shot in the chest, and the other in the leg. A father confirmed that his 15-year-old son was the injured victim, sustaining a gunshot wound to the thigh

At a press conference later that day, Kill Devil Hills Assistant Police Chief Dana Harris described the shooting as an “isolated incident” and assured the public that there was no further threat. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended nearby. No additional details about the suspect or the motive have been released as of now .
