Syracuse Mourns the Tragic Loss of Joseph Castillo, 40, Following Deadly Southside Shooting

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The city of Syracuse is reeling from the devastating and senseless loss of Joseph Castillo, a 40-year-old man whose life was cut short in a violent shooting late Tuesday night on the city’s Southside. Castillo’s untimely death has left his family, friends, and the wider community in mourning as police work to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.

According to the Syracuse Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before midnight on October 15 in the area of the 200 block of West Beard Avenue, a residential neighborhood on the Southside. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Joseph Castillo suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His death marks yet another painful chapter in the city’s ongoing battle against gun violence, and has reignited calls from community leaders and residents for unity, justice, and long-overdue reform.

Arrest Made in Connection with Castillo’s Death

After an intensive investigation, Syracuse Police, with the assistance of local and federal agencies, were able to quickly develop a suspect. On Wednesday, October 16, authorities arrested 41-year-old Lakeeyah May, of Syracuse, in connection with the homicide. May was taken into custody without incident in the 500 block of West Brighton Avenue, less than 24 hours after the shooting.

The arrest brings a sense of relief and progress in the pursuit of justice, but for those close to Joseph Castillo, it cannot undo the pain of losing a beloved family member and friend.

“This arrest is the result of tireless work by our detectives, who were determined to bring some measure of justice to Mr. Castillo’s loved ones,” said Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “This was a senseless act of violence, and we hope this arrest marks the first step in holding the perpetrator accountable.”

A Beloved Son, Brother, and Father

Joseph Castillo is being remembered as a devoted father, loving son, loyal friend, and gentle soul who worked hard to provide for his family and better his life. Friends say he was known for his quiet strength, generous heart, and a sense of humor that could lift even the darkest of moods.

“He was always trying to do the right thing,” said one longtime friend. “Joe had been through struggles, like a lot of us, but he was making his way, staying out of trouble, and focusing on what mattered most—his kids.”

Family members described Castillo as someone who “put his children first” and who remained deeply connected to his family and cultural roots.

“He didn’t deserve this. No one does. But Joe… he was a peacemaker, not someone who went looking for problems,” said a relative during a vigil held Wednesday night. “We just want justice, and we want his memory to be honored with peace, not more violence.”

Ongoing Investigation

While Lakeeyah May has been arrested, Syracuse Police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not yet released a full account of the events that led to the shooting or disclosed a potential motive.

May is currently facing charges related to second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to a preliminary police report. She is being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center, and is expected to be arraigned later this week.

Detectives continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and work with the District Attorney’s Office to build a strong case. Anyone with additional information about the shooting is urged to contact the Syracuse Police Department’s Homicide Tip Line at (315) 442-5222.

Community in Grief, Calls for Change

In the wake of Castillo’s death, community members, faith leaders, and anti-violence advocates gathered for an impromptu vigil near the scene of the shooting. Candles, flowers, and handwritten messages now decorate the sidewalk where Joseph took his last breath.

The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the urgent need to address the root causes of violence in Syracuse, including poverty, mental health, lack of opportunity, and easy access to firearms.

“This isn’t just about Joe, as tragic and heartbreaking as his loss is,” said community organizer Tina Sharpe. “This is about the dozens of families every year who are burying their loved ones because of gun violence. We can’t keep living like this—numb and reactive. We need prevention, intervention, and healing.”

Mayor Ben Walsh released a statement expressing condolences to the Castillo family and reaffirming the city’s commitment to reducing violent crime through collaborative policing, youth engagement, and community investment.

“Joseph Castillo’s life mattered. His death is a tragedy that should never have happened,” Mayor Walsh said. “We will not stop working until every person in this city can feel safe walking down their street. I extend my deepest sympathy to Joseph’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Final Arrangements and Support for the Family

Joseph Castillo’s family is currently in the process of making funeral arrangements. A public memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs and provide support to his children.

The family is asking for privacy as they grieve and prepare to say goodbye to a man whose life ended far too soon.

If you or someone you know is affected by gun violence, resources are available. Please contact local support organizations such as OGs Against Violence or the Trauma Response Team.

Rest in peace, Joseph Castillo. May your name be a reminder of the work still to be done, and the love that remains long after violence fades.
