Stonington Community Mourns the Loss of Joel Trebisacci, 47, Found Unresponsive at Town Fishing Dock

STONINGTON, Conn. (August 4, 2025) โ€” The quiet coastal town of Stonington is grappling with heartbreak following the tragic death of Joel Trebisacci, 47, of Westerly, Rhode Island, who was found unresponsive Saturday morning at the Stonington Town Fishing Dock. Authorities have confirmed his passing, prompting an outpouring of grief from both the Stonington and Westerly communities.

According to the Stonington Police Department, officers were called to the scene shortly before 6:00 a.m. after a report came in of a man lying motionless near the edge of the dock. Emergency medical services responded quickly, but despite their efforts, Trebisacci was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say there were no immediate signs of foul play. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Officials stated that preliminary evidence suggests a medical emergency may have occurred while Trebisacci was alone at the dock, a location he was known to frequent.

A longtime resident of Westerly and a familiar face in the southeastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island fishing communities, Trebisacci was described by those who knew him as a kind-hearted and hardworking man with a deep love for the water.

โ€œHe had salt in his blood and the sea in his soul,โ€ said family friend and fellow fisherman Mike Duarte. โ€œJoel was someone who would give you the shirt off his back. This dock was like a second home to him.โ€

Trebisacci was a skilled fisherman, often seen casting a line at the town dock during the early morning hours. Friends say he found solace in the quiet rhythm of the water and camaraderie among the small fishing community that gathers there regularly.

News of his sudden passing has stunned friends, neighbors, and loved ones across Westerly and Stonington, where he had built lasting friendships over the years. Many shared memories of Joelโ€™s good-natured personality, generous spirit, and strong work ethic.

โ€œHe was one of the most genuine people Iโ€™ve ever met,โ€ said Lisa Bianchi, a longtime neighbor. โ€œHe loved his family, loved the ocean, and never asked for anything. Just a good man, taken way too soon.โ€

Joel Trebisacci is survived by his two adult children, his parents, and several siblings, all of whom are said to be devastated by the sudden loss. In a statement released by the family, they expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support:

โ€œWe are heartbroken over the loss of our beloved Joel. He was a father, a son, a brother, and a friend to many. We ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time as we try to process this tragedy.โ€

Stonington Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Trebisacciโ€™s death but reiterated that there is no indication of foul play. Anyone who may have seen Joel in the area of the fishing dock late Friday evening or early Saturday morning is encouraged to contact the department.

In honor of Trebisacciโ€™s life, a candlelight vigil is being planned for later this week at the Stonington Town Fishing Dock, where friends and family members will gather to remember a man who brought warmth and light to those around him.

A Life Remembered by the Sea

Joel Trebisacciโ€™s passing serves as a solemn reminder of the fragility of life. Yet, even in grief, his community finds comfort in the memory of a man who lived with simplicity, honesty, and heart.

Funeral arrangements are currently being made and will be announced by the family in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a local maritime or mental health organization, in Joelโ€™s memory.

May he rest in peace.
