Springville High School Incident Resolved Peacefully After Student Reports Suicidal Thoughts and Possession of Firearm

SPRINGVILLE, AL — A potentially tragic situation was averted early this morning at Springville High School, as quick action by law enforcement and school officials ensured the safety of students and staff after a female student reported having suicidal thoughts and claimed to be in possession of a firearm.

According to Springville Police Chief Wayne Walton, the department received a 911 call at approximately 7:13 a.m. from the student herself. The female student, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed due to her age, contacted emergency services and reported that she was feeling suicidal and that she had a handgun with her on campus.

Immediate Response by School Resource Officer

Upon receiving the distressing call, a Springville School Resource Officer (SRO) stationed at the school acted without delay and located the student inside the school’s lunchroom. The officer engaged the student calmly and safely, ensuring that the situation remained under control.

During their interaction, officers found a handgun concealed in the student’s backpack, which was promptly secured without any resistance or escalation. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the firearm was removed without incident.

“This was a situation that could have gone very differently,” said Chief Walton in a brief press conference. “Thanks to the bravery of the student in reaching out, the professionalism of our SRO, and the support from responding officers, a crisis was defused before anyone was harmed.”

Mental Health Support and Hospitalization

Following the recovery of the weapon, the student was transported to Children’s Hospital for immediate evaluation and mental health care. Officials emphasized that the student is receiving appropriate support and treatment.

“This young person was clearly in pain and reached out for help in a moment of crisis,” said a spokesperson from the Springville Police Department. “We are grateful she did, and our priority now is ensuring she gets the care she needs.”

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist Springville Police at the scene and helped secure the school campus as a precaution. Both agencies worked collaboratively to ensure that there was no threat to the safety of students or staff during the incident.

No Ongoing Threat to the School Community

Law enforcement has confirmed that there was never an active threat to the general student population or school personnel. The situation was quickly contained, and regular school operations resumed later in the morning, though some classes experienced minor delays as the investigation unfolded.

In a statement issued by Springville High School Principal Lisa Hargrove, parents were reassured of their children’s safety:

“We want to commend our School Resource Officer and local law enforcement for their swift and compassionate response. Our thoughts are with the student and their family during this difficult time. We remain committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of all our students.”

Additional counselors and mental health professionals have been made available on campus for students or staff who may have been affected by the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

While the situation has been resolved peacefully, an investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are working to determine how the student obtained the firearm and whether any other individuals may have been involved or aware of the situation beforehand.

No charges have been announced as of now, and law enforcement has stated that they will be working closely with mental health professionals, school officials, and the student’s family in handling the matter appropriately.

Given the sensitive nature of the incident, no further details have been released at this time.

Community Urged to Support Youth Mental Health

The event has sparked renewed conversations around mental health awareness, firearm access, and student support services. Local leaders are urging parents, educators, and peers to remain vigilant and to take all signs of emotional distress seriously.

“Our schools should be safe spaces for learning and growth,” said a statement from the St. Clair County Board of Education. “Today’s incident is a stark reminder of the mental health challenges many young people face. We encourage families to talk openly, check in regularly, and seek help when needed.”
