SHREVEPORT, La. — Community Grieves the Heartbreaking Loss of 17-Year-Old Martaevion Loston After Tragic Shooting at Community Event

The Shreveport community is mourning the devastating and untimely death of 17-year-old Martaevion Loston, a promising young man whose life was cut short during what should have been a night of joy, unity, and celebration. The tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening, October 7, 2025, and has since left the city shaken and searching for answers.

A Night Meant for Celebration Turns to Tragedy

According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 9:00 p.m. following reports of gunfire at a community event held near the intersection of Milam Street and Common Street, just outside a local recreation center. The event, organized as a back-to-school gathering and fall celebration for teens, had drawn dozens of local youth and families.

Authorities say a dispute broke out among a small group of individuals during the event. While details remain under investigation, it is believed that at least one person pulled out a firearm and began shooting into the crowd.

Martaevion Loston, a student at Huntington High School, was struck multiple times. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders and bystanders who attempted life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Remembering Martaevion: A Bright Light in the Community

Family members describe Martaevion as a kind-hearted, energetic teenager with a smile that could light up a room. He was deeply involved in school activities and known for his love of music, sports, and spending time with his younger siblings.

“He was just starting to figure out his path,” said his mother, Keshia Loston, through tears. “He had dreams. He wanted to be something — make something of himself. And now that chance is gone.”

Classmates and teachers at Huntington High held a moment of silence on Wednesday morning, and grief counselors have been made available for students coping with the loss of their friend and peer.

“Martaevion was a joy to be around,” said his school counselor. “He had a contagious laugh, a caring spirit, and a deep love for his friends and family. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.”

Police Investigation Underway

As of Thursday morning, police have not made any arrests in the case, but investigators are following multiple leads. They confirmed that shell casings from two different firearms were recovered at the scene, suggesting more than one person may have been involved in the shooting.

“This was an act of senseless violence that took the life of a child,” said Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith during a press briefing. “We will not rest until we find those responsible.”

Authorities are urging the public — especially anyone who attended the event — to come forward with any information or video footage that may aid in identifying the shooter or shooters.

Anonymous tips can be submitted through Caddo Crime Stoppers at (318) 673-7373 or via the P3 Tips app.

Community Demands Change

In the wake of Martaevion’s death, community leaders and activists have called for urgent action to address the rising levels of youth violence in Shreveport. Pastor Jerome Wallace, who was present at the event, led a vigil on Wednesday night attended by dozens of residents, including Martaevion’s classmates and family.

“We are tired of burying our children,” Wallace said. “We must come together — as parents, leaders, educators, and neighbors — and create a future where our children are safe, where they can live to see their dreams fulfilled.”

City officials have announced plans to host a community forum next week to discuss new youth intervention strategies and enhanced security measures at public events.

Funeral Arrangements and Support

Funeral services for Martaevion Loston are currently being arranged by Heavenly Gates Funeral Home, with a tentative date set for Saturday, October 18. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by the family to help with funeral costs and to support his younger siblings, who are struggling to cope with the loss.

Martaevion is survived by his mother Keshia, two younger brothers, a grandmother who helped raise him, and countless friends and classmates who now carry the pain of his absence.

A Life Remembered

As the investigation continues and the community mourns, the name Martaevion Loston will not be forgotten. He was more than a victim of violence — he was a son, a student, a friend, and a symbol of potential stolen too soon.

His story now serves as a painful reminder of the work that lies ahead to protect the next generation.

Rest in peace, Martaevion. You were loved. You mattered. And your community will fight in your name.
