Salem, Ore. (KATU) — Authorities have identified the victim in a fatal train collision that occurred Saturday morning in Salem. The victim has been named as Robert Ivar Jeffers, a 66-year-old resident of Salem.
Salem Police were dispatched to the scene shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, following reports of a collision near the intersection of McGilchrist Street and Pringle Road SE. According to officials, Union Pacific personnel were the first to report the incident after a southbound train struck a man who was walking on the tracks.
Emergency responders arrived quickly but unfortunately, Robert Ivar Jeffers succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events.
