ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Community Mourns the Tragic Loss of 16-Year-Old Aajion Wright, Fatally Shot in Late-Night Homicide
A deep sense of grief and heartbreak has gripped the Rochester community following the tragic and senseless killing of 16-year-old Aajion Wright, who was fatally shot late Thursday night, October 9, 2025, in what authorities have officially ruled a homicide.
According to the Rochester Police Department, the shooting occurred shortly before 11:00 p.m. in the 100 block of Warwick Avenue, located in the city’s 14611 ZIP code, a residential area on Rochester’s southwest side. First responders arrived quickly after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the area.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the teenage victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Life-saving efforts were immediately initiated by police and emergency medical personnel at the scene before Aajion was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A Young Life Cut Short
Aajion Wright, remembered by those who knew him as bright, kind-hearted, and full of promise, was a student with dreams of pursuing a career in technology. Family members described him as a gentle soul who loved music, video games, and spending time with his younger siblings.
“He wasn’t perfect, but he was a good kid,” said Shanice Wright, Aajion’s mother. “He had goals, he wanted better for himself. And someone took that from him.”
Friends and classmates flooded social media with tributes, sharing stories of Aajion’s humor, creativity, and kindness.
“He was always making us laugh, even on our worst days,” one classmate wrote. “He didn’t deserve this. None of us do.”
Investigation Underway
Police have confirmed that the shooting is being actively investigated as a targeted act of violence, though no arrests have been made as of Friday morning. Detectives are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to come forward.
“This is an open and active investigation,” said Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department. “We are doing everything we can to bring justice to Aajion and his family. But we need the community’s help. If you know something, say something.”
Authorities noted that several shell casings were recovered at the scene, and surveillance footage from nearby residences and traffic cameras is being reviewed.
Community advocates have also expressed concern about the persistent cycle of gun violence impacting Rochester’s youth.
“We are losing too many of our young people to gun violence,” said Pastor Vernon Mason, a local faith leader. “It’s devastating and unacceptable. Aajion was a child — someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s future.”
Community Response
In the hours following the tragedy, local residents gathered for an impromptu vigil near the site of the shooting. Candles, balloons, and photos were placed on a makeshift memorial as friends and neighbors stood in solidarity with Aajion’s grieving family.
Rochester City School District officials also issued a statement on Friday morning, expressing condolences to the Wright family and offering grief counselors to students and staff at Aajion’s school.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our students,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family, classmates, and all who knew and loved him. Support services will be available throughout the week.”
The Bigger Picture
Aajion Wright’s death marks yet another painful chapter in a year that has seen a troubling rise in shootings involving teens across Rochester. Community leaders are calling for renewed investment in youth outreach programs, mentorship opportunities, and violence prevention efforts.
“We can’t keep burying our children,” said Councilmember Melinda Ortiz, who represents the district. “We need to come together — families, schools, law enforcement, faith groups — and do everything we can to stop this from happening again.”
A Call for Justice
As the Rochester Police Department continues to investigate, Aajion’s family and supporters are pleading with the public to speak up.
“If you know who did this, please come forward,” said his aunt, Latoya Henderson. “We deserve justice. Aajion deserves justice.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 585-423-9300 or via the P3 Tips app.
Honoring Aajion’s Life
Funeral arrangements are currently being made, with details to be shared by the family in the coming days. A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched to support funeral expenses and provide assistance to the Wright family as they navigate this unthinkable loss.
As the city of Rochester grapples with the grief of losing yet another young life, the memory of Aajion Wright will live on — in the hearts of his family, the halls of his school, and the voices of a community determined to demand change.
Rest in peace, Aajion. You were loved. You mattered. You will not be forgotten.
