Pedestrian Identified After Fatal Crash in Central West End

Tragedy struck the Central West End early on the morning of October 13, 2025, when a pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle. The victim, 36-year-old Joseph Mahoney, a local construction worker, later succumbed to his injuries, leaving the community mourning a profound loss.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., police officers responded to emergency calls reporting a person hit by a vehicle on the 100 block of North Kingshighway Boulevard. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Mr. Mahoney lying in the middle lane, critically injured after being struck by a Chevrolet Malibu traveling northbound.

According to preliminary reports, the Chevrolet Malibu was moving north on Kingshighway approaching Lindell Boulevard when the collision occurred. Joseph Mahoney, dressed in his construction safety gear, was reportedly attempting to stop traffic in order to relocate construction equipment from an off-road site nearby. However, at the time of the incident, no active roadwork was underway, and investigators noted a lack of barricades, cones, or warning signs that could have alerted motorists to the presence of any obstruction or lane closure.

Emergency responders rushed Mr. Mahoney to a nearby hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he tragically passed away three days later on October 16th. The driver of the Malibu remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with authorities.

This heartbreaking incident raises important questions about pedestrian safety, especially concerning workers in construction zones where adequate signage and safety measures are critical to preventing accidents. Investigators are continuing their work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether proper safety protocols were in place and if any contributing factors such as visibility or driver distraction played a role.

The Central West End community is deeply saddened by the loss of Joseph Mahoney, a dedicated construction worker whose life was cut short while performing a task aimed at maintaining safety and order. As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Joseph’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. May his memory be a reminder of the importance of vigilance and care on our roadways, especially for those who work tirelessly to keep them safe.
