Palm Springs Woman Killed in Head-On Crash on Avenue N Identified as Chelsea Jewkes; Suspect Fled Scene After Fleeing Prior Crash

PALMDALE, Calif. —A tragic sequence of events unfolded Friday evening in Palmdale, culminating in a violent head-on collision that left one woman dead, several others injured, and a community shaken. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the deceased as 31-year-old Chelsea Jewkes, a resident of Palm Springs.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, near the intersection of Avenue N and 22nd Street West, according to officials from the Antelope Valley California Highway Patrol (CHP) station.

The Crash: A Chain Reaction of Reckless Driving

According to CHP Sgt. Deonte Hall, the driver of a black Mercedes-Benz, later found to be fleeing the scene of an earlier freeway crash, was traveling at high speed and weaving in and out of traffic westbound on Avenue N. In a devastating turn of events, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a silver Lexus traveling eastbound.

Emergency crews arrived to find a chaotic scene: both vehicles were heavily damaged. The Lexus was discovered on the dirt shoulder of Avenue N, while the Mercedes-Benz came to rest sideways in the roadway. The force of the impact left both vehicles mangled and unrecognizable from their original forms.

Jewkes, who was driving the Lexus, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, who has not yet been publicly identified, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster by ambulance, where they remain in critical condition.

Driver and Passenger of Mercedes-Benz Fled on Foot

In a shocking twist, both the driver and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz fled the scene on foot following the crash. Authorities say the pair attempted to escape into nearby neighborhoods, but were apprehended within minutes thanks to rapid response from CHP and local law enforcement officers. Both individuals were injured in the crash, and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

No identities have yet been released for the fleeing suspects, and their condition remains unknown. CHP officials confirmed that criminal charges are expected, including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and felony evasion.

Multiple Victims Impacted

In addition to the fatal injuries sustained by Jewkes and the critical condition of her passenger, the crash also affected at least two other individuals:

  • One adult female victim from the earlier freeway crash that the Mercedes was reportedly fleeing from was transported to the hospital by private vehicle.

  • A pregnant woman, who was in a separate vehicle when debris from the crash struck her car, was left visibly shaken and emotionally distressed. Out of an abundance of caution, she was transported to the hospital for evaluation and monitoring, given the potential risk to her unborn child.

Community Mourning and Outrage

The death of Chelsea Jewkes has sent shockwaves through the community. Friends and family members have described her as a vibrant, caring soul with a love for animals and a deep devotion to her family.

“Chelsea was a light in our lives,” said Amanda Reeves, a close family friend. “To lose her like this — so suddenly, and in such a senseless way — is beyond heartbreaking.”

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help support Jewkes’ family with funeral expenses and to assist the critically injured passenger.

Investigation Ongoing, Charges Expected

The Antelope Valley CHP and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are actively investigating the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Sgt. Hall confirmed that the black Mercedes had been involved in a separate crash on the freeway just minutes before the deadly impact on Avenue N.

“This was a case of complete disregard for human life,” Hall said. “The suspect chose to flee from a prior crash and, in doing so, took the life of an innocent woman and severely injured multiple others. We will be working closely with the District Attorney’s Office to ensure justice is served.”

What Comes Next

As investigators comb through evidence — including surveillance footage, eyewitness statements, and vehicle data — authorities are urging anyone who may have seen the crash or the suspect’s earlier actions on the freeway to come forward.

Witnesses or those with relevant dashcam footage are encouraged to contact the Antelope Valley CHP Station at (661) 948-8541.

Final Thoughts

The death of Chelsea Jewkes underscores the devastating consequences of reckless driving and hit-and-run crimes. What began as a fleeing suspect evading responsibility for an earlier crash, ended in loss of life, serious injury, and emotional trauma for multiple victims.

As Palmdale mourns the life of a young woman taken too soon, officials are hoping that increased awareness and community vigilance can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
