OMAHA, NE — Tragic Early Morning Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Critically Injured Near North 24th and Patrick Avenue

A violent and tragic shooting in the early hours of Monday morning has left one man dead and two others fighting for their lives near the intersection of North 24th Street and Patrick Avenue in Omaha. The incident, which unfolded just after midnight, has sent shockwaves through the historic North Omaha community and prompted an urgent investigation by local authorities.

According to the Omaha Police Department (OPD), officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:18 a.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they discovered three adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds on or near the sidewalk in front of a small business complex.

Emergency medical personnel from the Omaha Fire Department rendered aid and transported all three victims to Nebraska Medical Center. One of the victims, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two remain in critical condition, according to hospital officials.

Investigation Underway

The OPD’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation and has already begun interviewing witnesses, collecting surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and canvassing the area for leads. No arrests have been made as of Monday afternoon, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive.

In a statement released Monday morning, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation.

“This is a senseless act of violence that has torn through three families and a neighborhood,” Chief Schmaderer said. “We will not stop until we find those responsible. We urge anyone who saw or heard anything to contact us immediately.”

Officials believe the shooting may have stemmed from a confrontation that escalated into gunfire, but they are not ruling out other possibilities. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or random and whether it may be connected to recent conflicts or ongoing disputes in the area.

Community Reeling

The intersection of North 24th Street and Patrick Avenue is well-known in Omaha’s historic Black community as a cultural and business corridor, but in recent years, it has also seen a troubling rise in gun violence.

Residents and community leaders expressed both grief and frustration in response to the latest tragedy.

“This is heartbreaking, and it’s happening too often,” said Pastor Reginald Bryant of New Vision Baptist Church, located just blocks from the crime scene. “We need more than thoughts and prayers—we need intervention, resources, and real community engagement.”

By mid-morning Monday, community members had begun placing flowers and candles near the site of the shooting. A vigil is reportedly being planned for later in the week to honor the victims and call for peace.

City Leaders Respond

In a press conference held Monday afternoon, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert addressed the incident, saying, “This type of violence has no place in our city. We are working closely with OPD and community organizations to strengthen prevention efforts, support victims’ families, and ensure accountability.”

She also reiterated the city’s commitment to expanding youth intervention programs and violence prevention initiatives, particularly in areas disproportionately affected by gun violence.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

The shooting marks one of several violent incidents reported in Omaha in recent weeks, raising growing concerns among residents about safety and the need for more visible policing and community partnerships.

Organizations like the Empowerment Network and Omaha 360, which focus on curbing youth violence and improving neighborhood conditions, have renewed their calls for proactive strategies to address the root causes of crime, including poverty, limited access to mental health resources, and lack of economic opportunity.

Victim Support and Public Cooperation

The Omaha Police Department has mobilized its Victim Assistance Unit to provide support to the families affected. Grief counseling and emergency resources are being offered through city and nonprofit partnerships.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting, including video footage from nearby homes or businesses, to step forward. Anonymous tips can also be submitted.
