A police officer and a civilian bystander were shot Tuesday evening during a harrowing and chaotic scene inside a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan, sending shockwaves through one of the busiest commercial hubs in the world. Incident Unfolds in the Heart of Manhattan
The shooting occurred shortly after 5:15 p.m. inside a commercial office building located near 45th Street and Sixth Avenue, just steps from Times Square and Grand Central Terminal. At the time, hundreds of workers and visitors were inside the building, many of whom were preparing to leave for the day when chaos erupted.
According to early reports from the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers were responding to a 911 call involving a disturbance on one of the upper floors of the building. When officers arrived, they encountered an armed suspect. During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the wounding of both a police officer and an innocent bystander.
The injured officer, whose name has not yet been publicly released, is a veteran of the force with over eight years of service. He was struck in the upper torso and rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Officials say his condition is serious but stable.
