Michigan Road Commission Grieves Loss of Cedric Jones in Orchard Lake Road Work Zone Tragedy

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is mourning the tragic loss of Cedric Jones, a dedicated member of their team who was killed in a work zone accident on Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills on July 23, 2025. Jones, a 43-year-old father of six, was part of a three-person crew performing drainage basin repairs near 10 Mile Road when a southbound driver crossed the median and struck the workers. Despite immediate medical attention, Jones succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Two other workers were seriously injured and remain hospitalized

Jones had been with the RCOC for just over a year and was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his family. He was also a minister at Wings of Love Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, where he served alongside his wife. His uncle, Pastor Alvin Jackson, described him as a hardworking man who loved his wife and children deeply. Jones was also known for his powerful singing voice as part of the church’s praise team .

The RCOC expressed profound sadness over the incident, emphasizing the importance of work zone safety. Managing Director Dennis Kolar stated, “This devastating event is a stark reminder of the importance of work zone safety. Despite our crew taking every precaution to secure the area, there are still risks every single day on the job.” The commission is prioritizing support for the affected families and staff during this difficult time

The Farmington Hills Police Department is actively investigating the crash. Chief John Piggott highlighted that the work zone had appropriate safety measures in place, including warning lights and cones, but the driver crossed the median, rendering these precautions ineffective

Jones leaves behind six children, ranging from 15 to 24 years old. His family has expressed their grief and is seeking justice, with some members starting a GoFundMe campaign to support his childrenโ€™s education and honor his legacy

As the community reflects on this tragedy, the RCOC and the Jones family hope it serves as a reminder for all drivers to exercise caution and respect for road workers, who perform essential services to keep our communities safe.
