Memphis Officer Demetrice Johnson Remembered as Hero After Fatal Crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. โ€” The Memphis community is mourning the loss of Police Officer Demetrice Lavelle Johnson, who tragically died in the line of duty on August 2, 2024. Officer Johnson, 34, was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of Mississippi Boulevard and Danny Thomas Boulevard at approximately 3:00 a.m.

A Devoted Public Servant

Officer Johnson began his career with the Memphis Police Department in May 2023. He graduated from the Training Academy in March 2024 and was assigned to the North Main Station.

He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly and an MPD family that will push on to honor his memory through service.

The Tragic Incident

The fatal crash occurred when a gray Nissan collided with an MPD squad car on Danny Thomas Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard. The driver of the Nissan had been wounded in a nearby shooting and was also killed in the crash. Officer Johnson’s partner suffered critical injuries but has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Community Honors and Funeral Services

In the wake of Officer Johnson’s death, the Memphis Police Department organized a “Sea of Blue” procession to honor his memory. The procession began at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and traveled through various parts of the city, with law enforcement vehicles from across the region participating.

A candlelight vigil was held to show solidarity and support for the loved ones of Officer Johnson.

The funeral service was held at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with hundreds of family, friends, and fellow officers in attendance. Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis and Memphis Mayor Paul Young were among the dignitaries who paid their respects.

Remembering Officer Johnson

Officer Johnson’s family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support during this difficult time. “The family of Officer Demetrice L. Johnson sincerely appreciates your prayers, comforting expressions, acts and deeds of kindness extended to them during their time of bereavement,” they said in a statement.

Officer Johnson’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and loving family man will continue to inspire those who knew him. His commitment to protecting and serving the Memphis community will not be forgotten.
