In Loving Memory of Dr. Michael Johnson: A Healer, A Humorist, A Hometown Hero
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of Dr. Michael Johnson, a beloved pediatrician, colleague, mentor, and friend. His unexpected departure leaves an immeasurable void in our practice, our community, and in the hearts of the countless families who knew and trusted him.
Dr. Johnson wasn’t just a pediatrician—he was a fixture in the lives of so many, known for his compassion, sharp wit, and the rare ability to connect with children and parents alike in a way that made even the scariest doctor visits feel a little less intimidating, and often, a little bit brighter.
Over the years, he became affectionately known simply as “MJ”, and if you ever crossed paths with him, you likely left with a smile—or at least a story to tell.
A Doctor with Heart — and Humor
It was never just about medicine for Dr. Johnson. It was about human connection. Whether he was singing a silly song to calm a toddler, delivering a well-timed one-liner to distract a nervous teen, or quietly reassuring an anxious parent, Dr. Johnson brought lightness and empathy to everything he did.
One memory that continues to echo through the halls of our practice perfectly captures his playful spirit:
On the day of a long-anticipated BYU–Utah football rivalry game, Mike—an unabashed University of Utah fan—walked into an exam room to see a teenage patient he knew was a die-hard BYU supporter. In one hand, he held a tiny syringe filled with red liquid; in the other, a giant one filled with blue. With a perfectly straight face and his signature mischievous grin, he asked, “Which vaccine would you prefer today?”
The patient chose wisely. And as always, Mike got a laugh, built trust, and—perhaps—converted another Utes fan in the process.
It was these moments—humorous, lighthearted, meaningful—that defined MJ’s approach to medicine and life. He believed that laughter belonged in healthcare. That even in moments of stress or uncertainty, kindness and humor could be as powerful as any prescription.
A Legacy of Care
Dr. Johnson dedicated his career to children’s health, and his passion for pediatrics was matched only by his dedication to the families he served. He remembered names, birthdays, inside jokes. He followed kids from infancy to adolescence and beyond, celebrating milestones, mourning losses, and cheering for his patients every step of the way.
His colleagues and staff will tell you he was the heartbeat of the clinic—always the first to lend a hand, crack a joke, or offer a listening ear. He challenged us to be better providers and reminded us that medicine is as much an art as it is a science.
“He didn’t just treat patients—he uplifted them,” said one longtime nurse. “He made us laugh, he made us think, and he reminded us every day why we chose this profession.”
Honoring Dr. Johnson
In the coming days, we want to provide an opportunity for the community to share their own memories and stories of Dr. Johnson—the ones that made you laugh, cry, or feel seen.
