In Loving Memory of Captain Nicholas Patrick Van Dam: A Hero Remembered
The small town of Murdo, South Dakota, is mourning the loss of one of its ownโCaptain Nicholas Patrick Van Dam, a dedicated volunteer firefighter who tragically lost his life while responding to a grass fire on Saturday evening, July 26, 2025. Captain Van Dam, 37, was driving a 1989 Ford Fire Tender northbound on 279th Street near Draper when the vehicle left the roadway, rolled, and ejected him. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene .
Captain Van Dam was a husband and father of four, known for his unwavering commitment to his community and his role as a longtime fire captain. His service was marked by heart, dedication, and a deep sense of duty to protect and serve. The Murdo Fire Department, along with the broader community, is grappling with the loss of a man who exemplified selflessness and courage.
In the wake of this tragedy, support has poured in for Captain Van Damโs family. A memorial fund has been established at First National Bank in Murdo, and a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $11,000 as of Tuesday . Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
