PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — With heavy hearts, the Sauk County community, along with friends and loved ones across Milwaukee and beyond, are mourning the tragic loss of 45-year-old Craig W. Lowry, who passed away following a devastating two-vehicle crash on WIS 60 near Prairie du Sac earlier this week.
According to preliminary reports from the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred in the late afternoon hours on Tuesday, when emergency crews were dispatched to a stretch of State Highway 60, just west of Prairie du Sac. Authorities say two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in significant damage and prompting an immediate response from local fire departments, EMS personnel, and law enforcement officers.
Despite the tireless efforts of first responders and medical staff, Craig Lowry succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, with authorities examining factors such as speed, road conditions, and possible impairment.
Lowry, a Milwaukee native who had recently been spending more time in the Sauk County area for work and family visits, is being remembered as a dedicated father, loyal friend, and hard-working professional. Known for his kind spirit and infectious sense of humor, those who knew him say he had a way of making every room a little brighter.
“Craig was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone,” said longtime friend and coworker Daniel Ruiz. “He had this quiet strength about him — dependable, genuine, and always putting others first. It’s hard to believe he’s gone.”
Family members shared that Lowry had a deep love for the outdoors, often spending his weekends fishing along the Wisconsin River or exploring the scenic backroads around Prairie du Sac. He was also passionate about volunteering, regularly participating in local food drives and community events across Milwaukee and Sauk County.
The Sauk Prairie community has come together in an outpouring of support, with a growing roadside memorial of flowers, candles, and heartfelt notes placed near the crash site on WIS 60. Local churches and organizations are planning a candlelight vigil later this week to honor his life and offer comfort to grieving family members.
Authorities continue to urge caution for drivers traveling through the area, especially during early morning and evening hours when visibility and road conditions can change quickly.
Funeral arrangements for Craig W. Lowry are currently being finalized, with details expected to be released by his family in the coming days.
As the community reflects on this tragic loss, many are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of holding loved ones close.
“Craig’s passing has left a hole in our hearts,” said family friend Melissa Hartman. “He lived with kindness and left behind a legacy of love. We’ll never forget him.”
