In Fort Deposit, James Deward “Tootie” Chambliss was affectionately known as a true “Renaissance Man”—a visionary whose creativity and community spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him As an independent filmmaker, he produced and directed impactful documentaries like Children Changing the World (his magnum opus) and You Can Change the World  The former was an ambitious, eight-year endeavor tracking Alabama schoolchildren’s efforts to make the world a better place—a testament to Tootie’s belief in the power of hope, youth, and perseverance

An Advocate for Community & Art

Beyond his film work, Tootie channeled his passion for art and service into multiple community roles. He co-owned Southern Land Management, bringing beauty to the landscape through thoughtful land improvement projects He served with zeal on the boards of the Alabama International Film Festival, Mid‑South Resource Conservation & Development Council, Lowndes County Health & Human Resources Agency, SKY (Skilled Knowable Youth) program, and the Fort Deposit Arts Council  Among his many voluntary endeavors, his commitment to Eye Care Alabama stands out—helping bring essential eye exams and glasses to underserved rural communities, embodying his generous spirit

His Guiding Philosophy

Tootie’s personal mantra captured his ethos perfectly:

“My Soul was a gift from God at birth, however the quality of my soul comes from the experiences of life… I have a devoted and adventurous heart and a spiritual soul. Some ask me, ‘Why?’ and my response is, ‘Why not?’

A Farewell & Celebration of Life

After weeks of battling a prolonged illness, Tootie passed away, leaving a legacy woven through the people, stories, and artistic expressions he inspired The community will gather to honor his life at Bethel Baptist Church in Fort Deposit, with the memorial service scheduled for Sunday, August 10, at 2:30 p.m. .
