Findlay Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man During Cherry Lane Incident
FINDLAY, Ohio — October 22, 2025
A tense situation on Findlay’s south side turned deadly Wednesday afternoon when police officers fatally shot an armed man who allegedly pointed a gun at them during an investigation into a reported shooting.
According to a statement released by the Findlay Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:47 p.m. to a residence at 1642 Cherry Lane following a 911 report of a possible shooting. Dispatchers attempted to contact the caller but received no response, prompting officers to proceed to the scene to investigate.
When police arrived, a man inside the home opened the door and, according to authorities, brandished a firearm toward the officers. In response, officers fired multiple shots, striking the man several times.
Immediate Response and Aftermath
Police said officers immediately provided life-saving medical aid after the shooting until Hanco EMS arrived on scene. The man was then transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
No officers were injured in the incident. The man’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family.
“This is a tragic situation for everyone involved,” said Findlay Police Chief Robert Ring in a brief statement Wednesday evening. “Our officers responded to what they believed was an active and dangerous situation. We will fully cooperate with the state’s investigation to ensure all facts are made clear.”
State Authorities Leading Investigation
As is standard procedure in police-involved shootings, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has taken over the investigation to ensure an independent and transparent review of the events leading to the man’s death. BCI agents remained on the scene through the afternoon and into the evening, collecting evidence, photographing the area, and conducting witness interviews.
A spokesperson for BCI confirmed that investigators will analyze body-worn camera footage, ballistics evidence, and officer statements. A final report will be turned over to the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine whether the officers’ use of force was justified.
Neighbors Describe Chaos and Shock
Residents along Cherry Lane described the scene as chaotic and frightening. Several reported hearing gunfire and seeing a large police presence within minutes.
“I was sitting in my living room when I heard what sounded like four or five pops,” said neighbor Janet Lawson, who lives two houses down. “Then suddenly, police cars and ambulances were everywhere. It’s scary because this is normally such a quiet street.”
Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said officers appeared to act quickly. “They were shouting commands, and then I heard shots. It all happened fast,” the resident said.
Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps
The Findlay Police Department has placed the involved officers on administrative leave, per department policy, while the investigation proceeds. Officials have not released details on how many officers discharged their weapons or how many shots were fired.
Chief Ring emphasized that the department is committed to transparency:
“We understand the community’s concerns whenever deadly force is used. We ask for patience as BCI completes its investigation so that the facts can speak for themselves.”
BCI officials said it could take several weeks to complete the investigation and forward findings to prosecutors. The Hancock County Coroner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Community Response
The shooting has already sparked discussions in Findlay about police training, mental health response, and communication during high-risk calls. Local leaders have urged calm as the facts are gathered.
“This is a deeply sad day for our community,” said Mayor Christina Muryn. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected — the family of the deceased and the officers who were placed in a life-or-death situation. We will rely on the investigative process to bring clarity and accountability.”
As of Wednesday night, police tape still surrounded the Cherry Lane home, and investigators were seen examining the front doorway where the confrontation reportedly began.
The Findlay Police Department has asked anyone with additional information or footage related to the incident to contact investigators or submit tips anonymously through Hancock County Crime Stoppers.
