BREAKING: Chaos Erupts Inside Evergreen Park Walmart as Shooting Leaves Two Injured, Suspect and Vehicle Apprehended After Multi-Agency Manhunt

Evergreen Park, IL — October 15, 2025 | 4:20 PM CST — What began as a routine afternoon at the Evergreen Park Walmart turned into a scene of panic and violence after shots rang out inside the store, triggering a massive police response and a manhunt that extended into multiple jurisdictions and neighborhoods across Chicago.

According to Evergreen Park Police, an active shooter threat was reported at the Walmart located near 95th Street and Western Avenue shortly before 2:00 PM. Officers from Evergreen Park, Chicago, and Oak Lawn Police Departments responded immediately, along with emergency medical crews from across the region.

Two People Shot, Dozens Injured During Panic

When officers arrived on the scene, they located two gunshot victims inside the store:

  • A 23-year-old male who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. He was listed in serious condition and transported to a nearby trauma center. According to witnesses, the man was chased into the Walmart by the suspect, indicating he was the intended target.

  • A 70-year-old woman, an innocent shopper, was shot in the foot while attempting to leave the store during the chaos. She is expected to recover.

The shooting caused widespread panic as dozens of shoppers fled the scene, resulting in additional injuries from falls and trampling. Due to the scale of potential injuries and chaos inside, authorities activated an EMS PLAN 1, bringing in emergency medical units from multiple departments.

Early Reports Confused; Suspect Identified and Apprehended on Foot

Initial information from witnesses indicated that the suspect had fled the scene in a Chevy Malibu. However, as police began reviewing surveillance footage from inside and outside the store, that description was corrected.

The updated suspect description was:

  • Black male

  • Light skin

  • Short dreadlocks

  • Wearing all black clothing

  • Fled the scene on foot, not in a vehicle

Evergreen Park Police, working alongside Chicago Police, requested aerial assistance, deploying a Chicago Police Department helicopter to aid in the search. The suspect was eventually located near the Walmart area and taken into custody without further incident. His identity has not yet been released.

BOLO Issued for Connected Vehicle — CPD Tracks and Apprehends 2 Females in Englewood

As the investigation unfolded, police also issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for a dark-colored Hyundai Elantra believed to be connected to the incident. The vehicle, bearing license plate FH 43049, was last seen heading westbound on 95th Street from Campbell.

Using License Plate Readers (LPRs), Chicago Police tracked the vehicle’s movements, tracing it from 79th & Cottage Grove through various South Side neighborhoods, ultimately locating it at 67th Street and Peoria Avenue in Englewood.

Officers conducted a stop and took two females into custody at the scene. It’s unclear what role the individuals played in the incident, but both are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

Walmart Closed, Investigation Active

The Walmart store has been closed for the remainder of the day as police process the scene and review extensive video surveillance. Investigators are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and working to establish the full sequence of events — including what led to the initial altercation and whether additional suspects or accomplices were involved.

Authorities have not released the names of any suspects or victims pending further investigation and notification of family members.

Community Reaction and Police Response

The incident has once again raised concerns about gun violence in public spaces and the increasing frequency of violent crimes in the Chicagoland area.

“This could’ve been a mass casualty event,” said one off-duty nurse who happened to be in the Walmart during the shooting. “People were running, screaming, knocking over displays. It was pure chaos.”

Social media lit up in real-time as the incident unfolded, with users using hashtags like #ChitownCrimeChasers and #fblifestyle to share footage, updates, and concerns about safety.

Evergreen Park Police praised the swift coordination between departments, noting that cooperation between local law enforcement, Chicago Police, and federal partners likely prevented further harm.
