The Milwaukee community is reeling from the devastating loss of 25-year-old Keiairra Travis, a vibrant young entrepreneur, daughter, sister, and friend, who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident just after midnight on Saturday in her hometown.
The incident occurred near the intersection of North 35th Street and West Capitol Drive, a busy corridor on Milwaukee’s north side. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, Keiairra was crossing the street when she was struck by a speeding vehicle that fled the scene. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
As police search for the driver responsible, an entire community is left heartbroken — mourning the loss of a young woman described by those who knew her as “ambitious, radiant, and full of promise.”
A Rising Star Dimmed Too Soon
Keiairra Travis was more than just a victim — she was a force of positivity and perseverance, well known in Milwaukee’s entrepreneurial and creative communities.
A proud graduate of Milwaukee Public Schools and later a business program at a local technical college, Keiairra had recently launched her own online boutique specializing in handmade fashion accessories and beauty products. Her brand, which she managed entirely on her own, had begun gaining traction through social media and local pop-up events.
“She had a vision, and she was making it real,” said her older sister, Monique Travis, through tears. “She didn’t wait around for opportunity — she created her own.”
Family members say Keiairra was working late that evening on a custom order for a client and had stepped out to meet a friend when the tragedy occurred.
Loved by All Who Knew Her
The outpouring of love from friends, neighbors, and community members has been overwhelming. Tributes have flooded social media, many sharing memories of Keiairra’s infectious smile, her fierce loyalty to loved ones, and her dream of building something lasting for her future and her family.
“Keiairra had the kind of energy that lit up a room,” said Jasmine Rivers, a friend and former classmate. “She rooted for everyone, especially other Black women trying to start their own businesses. She believed there was enough success to go around — and she wanted everyone to win.”
A candlelight vigil is being planned for this Sunday at Sherman Park, where Keiairra often participated in youth mentorship events and community cleanups.
Family Pleads for Justice
Keiairra’s grieving family is now calling for the driver responsible to come forward.
“You took our daughter. You took someone who was loved beyond measure,” said her mother, Latasha Travis, in an emotional plea during a press conference Saturday evening. “Please — do the right thing. Turn yourself in. We need answers. We need justice.”
Milwaukee police have confirmed that the suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark-colored SUV, possibly a late-model Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban, seen speeding through the intersection moments before the collision. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and urging the public to come forward with any information.
“We are actively investigating this case and will not stop until we identify and apprehend the driver responsible,” said MPD spokesperson Lt. Andrew Morales. “This is a senseless tragedy that should never have happened.”
A City Reckoning With a Pattern
The fatal hit-and-run marks yet another heartbreaking chapter in Milwaukee’s ongoing battle with reckless driving and traffic violence. In recent years, city officials have struggled to combat rising rates of hit-and-run incidents, many involving unlicensed drivers or vehicles traveling at dangerous speeds in residential neighborhoods.

“This isn’t just about one driver,” said Alderwoman Milele Coggs. “It’s about a pattern of neglect and lawlessness that’s putting our most vulnerable at risk. Keiairra’s death is heartbreaking, but sadly not unique. We must act.”
Honoring Her Legacy
As the city searches for answers, Keiairra’s family and friends are focused on honoring her life and legacy. A memorial fund has been launched to support funeral expenses and to establish a small business grant in her name, aimed at helping other young women entrepreneurs in Milwaukee pursue their dreams.
“We don’t want her to be remembered just for how she died,” said Monique. “We want people to remember what she lived for — and keep that spirit alive.”
