ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Rock Hill Police Department has confirmed an active investigation into a shooting incident that occurred earlier today at the Galleria Mall. Authorities report that the suspected shooter is in custody, and there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety.
According to police officials, the incident took place inside the mall during regular business hours, prompting an immediate emergency response. First responders arrived on the scene shortly after 3:00 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire within the mall.
Law enforcement quickly secured the area, detained the suspect without further incident, and began evacuating patrons and employees to ensure safety. Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or details about what may have led to the shooting. It is also unclear at this time whether there were any injuries.
“The situation is under control, and the suspect involved is in custody,” said Captain James Mitchell of the Rock Hill Police Department during a brief press conference. “There is no ongoing threat to the public. However, out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence in and around the mall area while our investigation continues.”
Shoppers and mall staff were visibly shaken as they exited the premises under the guidance of officers. Witnesses described moments of panic as announcements instructed people to seek shelter, and store managers quickly locked doors. One employee, who asked not to be named, said, “We didn’t know what was going on. We just heard people running and shouting. It was terrifying.”
Rock Hill Police have not yet confirmed whether the incident was targeted or random in nature. Detectives remain on the scene collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses.
Officials said more information will be released as it becomes available, and they encouraged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact the Rock Hill Police Department’s tip line at (803) XXX-XXXX.
The Galleria Mall will remain closed for the remainder of the evening as police continue their investigation. Mall management issued a brief statement thanking law enforcement for their swift response and assuring customers and tenants that safety remains their highest priority.
Local leaders, including Mayor John Gettys, have expressed concern and support for those affected. “This kind of violence has no place in our community,” the mayor said. “We are grateful to our first responders for their quick action and to the public for remaining calm during a very difficult situation.”
Residents are urged to remain aware but not alarmed, as law enforcement continues to investigate what led to this incident. Increased patrols and visibility will be maintained in the coming days to reassure the public and ensure continued safety in the area.
This is a developing story. More updates will be provided as they become available.
