BREAKING: One Dead, Another Injured in Multi-Victim Shooting at Packer Avenue and Broad Street in South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA — October 9, 2025 — A violent scene unfolded in South Philadelphia Thursday evening after a multi-victim shooting at the busy intersection of Packer Avenue and Broad Street, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to Philadelphia Police.

Authorities say the shooting occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m., in an area known for heavy foot and vehicle traffic, particularly during evening hours as commuters travel home and residents frequent nearby businesses.

Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire near a commercial strip. On arrival, officers located two adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds on the sidewalk just off the intersection.

Details of the Victims and Injuries

According to a Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson, one of the victims was found unresponsive, having been shot twice in the chest. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, the man — whose identity has not yet been publicly released — was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

The second victim, also an adult male, sustained less severe injuries but was transported to a local trauma center in stable condition. He is expected to survive and may provide key information to investigators, police say.

Chaotic Scene in a Crowded Area

The shooting caused panic in the area, with bystanders scrambling for cover as gunfire rang out. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with at least five to six shots heard in quick succession.

“It was just after work, the street was busy,” said Karen Mendoza, who was walking to her car nearby. “Then we heard loud bangs — maybe five, and people started screaming and ducking behind cars.”

Officers secured the area and canvassed nearby businesses and apartment buildings for security footage that may have captured the shooting or the suspect’s movements before or after the incident.

Suspect Information and Ongoing Investigation

As of Thursday night, no arrests have been made, and no suspect description has been formally released by police. However, investigators believe the shooting was targeted, not random.

Sources close to the investigation said detectives are reviewing multiple surveillance video feeds from nearby businesses and traffic cameras and are interviewing witnesses. Shell casings were recovered at the scene, and ballistic analysis is underway.

Community on Edge Amid Rising Gun Violence

The shooting adds to Philadelphia’s ongoing struggles with gun violence, particularly in neighborhoods and corridors that were once considered relatively safe. Broad Street, a major north-south artery, has seen increased police presence in recent months, yet incidents continue to occur.

“We cannot become numb to this,” said Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson, whose district includes the shooting site. “Every life lost is a family shattered. I’m calling for immediate action and increased patrols in South Philly hot spots like this one.”

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is expected to be involved in the investigation as details emerge regarding possible motives or connections between the victims and any potential suspects.

Police Ask for Public’s Help

The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information — including eyewitnesses, nearby residents, or individuals who may have cellphone video — to come forward.

“We believe there are people out there who saw what happened,” said Inspector D.F. Pace. “Even the smallest detail could help us make an arrest and bring justice to the victim’s family.”

Tips can be submitted anonymously to the Philadelphia Police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

Traffic and Safety Impact

Broad Street was temporarily closed between Pattison Avenue and Hartranft Street as police conducted their investigation. SEPTA bus routes in the area experienced brief detours, but service has since resumed with delays.

Residents in the area were advised to remain indoors for a short time while police cleared the scene. The intersection was reopened to the public by 9:00 p.m.
