Police Investigate Teen Fight, Gunfire Near Eastlake High School
CHULA VISTA, Calif. — October 9, 2025 — The Chula Vista Police Department is actively investigating a violent altercation involving multiple juveniles that erupted Thursday afternoon just steps away from Eastlake High School, culminating in gunfire that sent shockwaves through the school community and surrounding neighborhoods.
Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. at Chula Vista Community Park, located at 1060 Eastlake Parkway, directly north of the Eastlake High campus. The timing of the fight — which took place shortly after school dismissal — raised immediate concerns among parents, school officials, and residents.
Gunfire Erupts as Fight Escalates
Police say the altercation involved at least six individuals, believed to be juveniles, who were seen physically fighting in the grassy area of the community park. As tensions escalated, an unidentified individual, reportedly not directly involved in the fight, produced a black handgun and fired three shots into the air.
The sound of gunfire sent students and park-goers scattering for cover. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene with shouting, running, and confusion as the involved individuals quickly fled the area before law enforcement arrived.
“We were just hanging out after school when all of a sudden, a fight broke out,” said one student who asked to remain anonymous. “Then we heard three loud pops, and everyone started running. I’ve never been that scared.”
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and police believe the shots were not aimed at anyone, but fired as a means to intimidate or disperse the crowd.
Cell Phone Footage Captures Key Moments
In the wake of the incident, cell phone videos captured by bystanders have surfaced and were shared with 619 News Media. The footage, taken from multiple angles, shows the melee unfolding and the crowd reacting in panic after the gunshots are heard. Several individuals appear to be filming the fight, suggesting that more evidence could emerge as police continue to collect digital leads.
Investigators are currently working to identify all parties involved, including the person who discharged the firearm. Detectives are reviewing video footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing social media posts that may have documented or preempted the confrontation.
Investigation Led by School Resource Officers
The Chula Vista Police Department’s School Resource Officers (SROs), who are specifically assigned to work with local schools, have taken over the investigation. Their focus now is to determine whether the altercation was premeditated, what sparked the dispute, and how the individual with the firearm came to be involved.
“While this incident is deeply concerning, we want to reassure the public that we are treating it with the utmost seriousness,” said CVPD spokesperson Lt. Andrew Orozco. “This appears to be an isolated situation with no continuing threat to students or the community.”
No arrests have been made as of Thursday evening, and police say no suspect descriptions have been publicly released due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Community on Edge, School District Responds
The incident has prompted renewed concerns among parents and community members about youth violence, school safety, and access to firearms by minors.
“It’s terrifying to think this happened right next to a school,” said Sandra Molina, whose daughter attends Eastlake High. “We send our kids to school thinking they’re safe — something like this shakes that trust.”
The Sweetwater Union High School District, which oversees Eastlake High, released a brief statement acknowledging the incident and emphasizing that no students or staff were harmed.
“We are working closely with the Chula Vista Police Department and commend our staff for managing student dismissal with professionalism despite the situation unfolding nearby,” the district said. “Counseling and support services will be made available to students impacted by today’s events.”
Public Urged to Share Information
As the investigation moves forward, police are urging anyone with information — including additional videos, photographs, or tips about the people involved — to come forward.
“Community cooperation is crucial in cases like this,” Lt. Orozco added. “We believe there are individuals who know exactly who was involved, and we encourage them to do the right thing and speak with investigators.”

Ongoing Developments
This is a developing story, and police say no further updates are expected tonight. However, they will release additional details as they become available, particularly if suspects are identified or arrests are made.
Meanwhile, Eastlake High School is expected to operate on a normal schedule Friday, with increased police presence in and around campus to reassure students, parents, and staff.
