KINGSPORT, Tenn. (November 12, 2025) — The Kingsport community is reeling after a tragic shooting claimed the life of 37-year-old Johnathon Reed in the early morning hours of Monday, November 10th, 2025. Authorities say Reed was fatally shot in what investigators are calling a violent and senseless act that has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock.
According to the Kingsport Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after midnight on Monday. When they arrived at the scene, they found Reed suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, Reed was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an intense investigation, detectives quickly identified two suspects connected to the shooting. Krysten Atkins, 22, has been charged with First-Degree Murder, while Tyler Holly, 33, faces charges of Accessory After the Fact to First-Degree Murder. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and are currently being held at the Sullivan County Jail.
Police have not yet released details regarding a possible motive, but investigators confirmed that the victim and the suspects were known to each other. The case remains under active investigation as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected our community,” said Chief of Police David Quillen in a statement Tuesday afternoon. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Reed as they navigate this unimaginable loss. We want to assure the public that we are pursuing justice to the fullest extent of the law.”
Friends and neighbors have described Johnathon Reed as a kind and hardworking man who was always willing to lend a hand. A growing memorial of flowers, candles, and photographs has formed near the site of the shooting, as residents come together to honor his memory.
“He was one of the good ones,” said a family friend who attended a vigil Monday night. “He didn’t deserve this. The whole neighborhood is heartbroken.”
A GoFundMe page has reportedly been established to help Reed’s family cover funeral expenses and other costs associated with his passing. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later this week.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Kingsport Police Department Criminal Investigations Division or call Crime Stoppers at 423-392-4679.
This tragedy marks one of several violent incidents reported in the region in recent months, prompting renewed calls from community leaders for action to address gun violence and strengthen local support systems.
For now, Kingsport residents say their focus is on healing, unity, and justice for Johnathon Reed — a life taken far too soon.
