On the night of November 5, 2025, the city of Dallas and the broader football world were stunned by the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys. The incident — involving a late-night high-speed pursuit, a crash, a frantic search by law enforcement and reports of suicidal ideation — has left teammates, coaches, fans and loved ones grappling with grief, confusion and demanding answers.

The Events Unfolding

According to the Frisco Police Department (FPD) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the sequence of events began Wednesday evening:

  • Around 10:30 p.m., DPS troopers attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation on the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Blvd. The driver reportedly refused to stop, prompting a pursuit

  • The chase entered the city of Frisco, where the troopers eventually lost sight of the vehicle. A short time later the abandoned vehicle was found crashed on southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway.

  • During the search for the driver, FPD established a perimeter and utilized K-9 and drone units. At approximately 1:31 a.m. on Thursday, officers located the driver — identified as Marshawn Kneeland — deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • Prior to the crash and search, dispatch recordings reveal that Kneeland had sent a “goodbye” group text to family/friends and his girlfriend had told emergency services he was armed and possibly planning to end his life.

The police have classified the investigation as ongoing. The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will officially determine the cause and manner of death.
