JEFFERSON COUNTY, KS — The Jefferson County community is heartbroken after a tragic two-vehicle crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Lorretta Stewart of Nortonville on Saturday. The devastating collision occurred on K-4 Highway, leaving friends, family, and neighbors mourning the loss of a woman remembered for her kindness, warmth, and lifelong dedication to others.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash took place shortly after 5:30 p.m. when two vehicles collided near mile marker 356 on K-4 Highway. Preliminary reports indicate that Stewart was traveling westbound when another vehicle, heading east, crossed the center line under unclear circumstances, resulting in a violent head-on collision.
Emergency responders from Jefferson County Fire District No. 1, Nortonville EMS, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene. Despite life-saving efforts, Stewart was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities temporarily closed a section of K-4 for several hours Saturday evening to allow for accident reconstruction and cleanup, reopening the highway later that night.
