MONROE, La. — A Community in Mourning After Tragic Loss of 26-Year-Old Li Ojay
MONROE, La. — The city of Monroe is reeling from an unthinkable act of violence that has left the community heartbroken and searching for answers. What began as an ordinary weekend quickly turned into a nightmare when gunfire erupted late Saturday night, claiming the life of 26-year-old Li Ojay, a young man whose infectious energy and kind heart had made a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
According to Monroe Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the early morning hours near the 1900 block of Orange Street. When they arrived, they found Ojay suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts from first responders and paramedics, he was later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released details regarding a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
For those who knew Li Ojay, the loss is indescribable. Friends describe him as “the life of every room he walked into”, someone who lifted others up with laughter, compassion, and a relentless drive to do better for himself and those around him.
“Li had so much ahead of him,” said family friend Marcus Green. “He was working hard, staying positive, and trying to build something real for his future. To lose him like this—it’s just not fair.”
Family members gathered Sunday afternoon at a makeshift memorial on the corner where Ojay lost his life. Balloons, candles, and flowers surrounded framed photos of the 26-year-old smiling with friends and family. Dozens of mourners held hands, prayed, and wept together as the sun set, their grief mingled with frustration and disbelief at the ongoing wave of violence in their community.
Ojay’s mother, who spoke briefly to reporters, shared through tears that her son was more than just another name on a tragic list—he was “a beautiful soul with dreams bigger than this city.”
“He loved his family, he loved his friends, and he loved life,” she said. “He didn’t deserve this.”
Community leaders have also expressed sorrow and renewed calls for unity in the face of tragedy. Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis released a statement urging residents to come together to address the root causes of violence and to support families who have been affected.
“We must stand united against the senseless acts that continue to tear at the fabric of our city,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Li Ojay and all those grieving during this difficult time.”
As detectives continue to investigate, police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
Meanwhile, Ojay’s loved ones are determined to honor his legacy by remembering not how he died, but how he lived — with joy, generosity, and a boundless love for the people around him.
A candlelight vigil is planned for this weekend at Charles Johnson Park, where community members are expected to gather to celebrate his life and call for peace.
For Monroe, the tragedy of Li Ojay’s death is yet another painful reminder of how quickly lives can be stolen and futures shattered. But amid the sorrow, those who knew him best say his light will not be forgotten.
“He was love,” said longtime friend Alicia Brown. “And we’re going to make sure that love keeps shining — for Li.”
