BREAKING: One Dead After Shooting Inside Schnucks on Union Boulevard, SLMPD Launches Homicide Investigation
ST. LOUIS, MO — September 21, 2025
A routine afternoon at a local Schnucks grocery store turned into a tragic scene on Saturday when gunfire erupted inside the store, leaving one man dead and the community searching for answers.
According to a statement released by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), officers from District 5 were dispatched around 3:00 p.m. to the 3400 block of Union Boulevard, located in a busy shopping plaza, following reports of shots fired inside the grocery store.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported the man to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Homicide Investigation Underway
SLMPD confirmed that homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, working to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. Officials stated that it remains unclear how many individuals were directly involved in the incident.
“The last thing anyone expects when shopping for groceries is for their life to be in danger,” said a witness who asked to remain anonymous. “There were families, kids, and seniors in there. It was terrifying.”
Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence from the scene. Law enforcement sources believe the shooting may not have been random, though that has yet to be officially confirmed.
Community Urged to Assist
As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing to the public for assistance.
“We’re asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have captured video or photos — inside or outside the store — to come forward,” said an SLMPD spokesperson.
Anyone with information is urged to call the SLMPD Homicide Division at (314) 444-5371.
To maintain anonymity, individuals can also submit tips to CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS (8477). Tips that lead to a felony arrest may be eligible for a cash reward. Police emphasized that only information submitted through CrimeStoppers is eligible for such rewards.
Schnucks Responds
As of Saturday evening, Schnucks had not yet released an official statement regarding the shooting. The store is expected to remain closed while police continue their investigation. Customers arriving at the scene later in the day were met with crime scene tape and a heavy police presence.
Several employees were visibly shaken as they were escorted out by officers. Mental health resources are being offered to staff and any witnesses impacted by the trauma.
Safety Concerns and Community Impact
This incident adds to growing concerns about gun violence in public spaces, particularly in commercial and family-oriented settings. Local community leaders and residents expressed shock and sorrow, calling for immediate measures to address violence and improve security in city spaces.
“Our city is mourning once again,” said a local pastor who visited the scene to pray with bystanders. “Every life lost to senseless violence leaves a hole in the heart of St. Louis.”
