16-Year-Old David Mason Jr. Fatally Shot in West Garfield Park

“Lil Dave” Identified as Victim in Fatal West Garfield Park Shooting; Community Calls for Justice

CHICAGO — October 21, 2025

The life of a young Chicago teenager was tragically cut short Tuesday afternoon in a fatal shooting that has shaken the West Garfield Park neighborhood and renewed urgent calls for action against escalating youth violence in the city.

The victim has been identified by authorities as 16-year-old David Mason Jr., known to those closest to him as “Lil Dave.” Friends and family described the teen as full of potential — a young man with a vibrant personality, a heart for his community, and dreams that now will go unfulfilled.

According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of West End Avenue and Keeler Avenue, a residential area on Chicago’s West Side that has long struggled with gun violence and underinvestment.

The Incident

Police say officers from the 11th District were dispatched to the area following reports of gunfire and a person shot. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered that the victim had already been transported to a hospital by a private vehicle.

Shortly after, Mount Sinai Hospital contacted police to report that a teenage male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds had arrived at their emergency department.

Medical staff confirmed that the teen — later identified as David Mason Jr. — had sustained gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and arms, and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

According to preliminary reports, Mason was standing on or near a sidewalk when he was shot by an unknown assailant. At this time, investigators have not determined whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle, and no suspects are currently in custody.

The Area Four Violent Crimes Unit is handling the investigation. Detectives are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and witnesses but say more community cooperation is needed to identify those responsible.

Community Devastated by Another Youth Lost

News of the shooting spread quickly through the neighborhood, with family, friends, and local residents expressing outrage, sorrow, and exhaustion over yet another life lost to senseless violence.

“He was just a kid,” said Erica Matthews, a neighbor and friend of the family. “He had his whole life in front of him. This can’t keep happening. We’re losing too many of our children.”

David, affectionately called “Lil Dave,” was reportedly a student at a local high school and enjoyed basketball, music, and spending time with his younger siblings. Those who knew him said he had a bright future and an easy charm that made him beloved among his peers.

“He was funny, loyal, and always tried to lift people up,” said his cousin, Jamal Turner. “He didn’t deserve this. None of these kids do.”

Police Seek Public’s Help

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring closure to David’s grieving family and ensure justice is served.

“Every tip matters. Even the smallest detail could help lead to an arrest in this case,” said CPD spokesperson Sgt. Renee Wallace. “We owe it to this young man and his family to find out who did this and why.”

A Growing Pattern of Youth Violence

David’s death is part of a growing and deeply troubling trend of young people becoming victims of gun violence in Chicago. According to city statistics, more than 80 minors have been shot so far in 2025, with dozens losing their lives — many of them in neighborhoods like West Garfield Park.

Local activists say they are fed up with the cycle of violence, calling for a more comprehensive, long-term strategy that combines law enforcement with community outreach, education, mental health support, and job programs.

“We are burying our babies,” said Pastor Raymond Ellis, a longtime West Side organizer. “We need more than just police tape and press conferences. We need resources, investment, and accountability. Our kids deserve better.”

Remembering “Lil Dave”

As candles and flowers began appearing near the sidewalk where David was shot, his family continued to process their grief — surrounded by neighbors and loved ones who promised to keep his name alive.

A vigil is being organized by friends and family and is expected to take place later this week near the site of the shooting.

“He was not a statistic,” said his aunt, Monique Mason. “He was a son, a brother, a nephew, and a friend. We are devastated. But we are also determined — determined to find answers, and to make sure this never happens to another child.”

The Investigation Remains Active

As of this writing, police have not released further information regarding possible suspects or motives. Detectives continue to urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward, emphasizing that community involvement is critical in solving crimes like these.

David Mason Jr.’s name now joins a heartbreaking list of youth taken too soon — but those who knew him are adamant that he will be remembered not just for how he died, but for the joy he brought to those around him.
