UMN Twin Cities Public Safety Alert: Gunshots Reported Near Rapson Hall – No Reported Injuries

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at approximately 8:44 p.m., a University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) supervisor reported hearing gunshots near Rapson Hall on the Twin Cities campus. The incident occurred while a student group event was actively taking place inside the building, with an estimated 300 attendees present at the time.

UMPD officers responded immediately to the scene and began a comprehensive search of the surrounding area. Additional law enforcement partners joined the effort to ensure campus safety and to investigate the source and nature of the gunfire.

As of now, there are no reported victims, and no injuries have been confirmed. Officers have not identified any suspects or recovered any weapons at this time. Investigators are actively reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in the area in an effort to determine what occurred and whether there is any ongoing threat to the community.

Out of an abundance of caution, the University of Minnesota is urging students, faculty, staff, and visitors to avoid the area near Rapson Hall while the investigation continues. Police presence will remain heightened in the area throughout the night and into the following day as a precautionary measure and to provide reassurance to the campus community.

The safety of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors is our top priority. UMPD, in coordination with campus leadership and external law enforcement agencies, is committed to maintaining a safe learning and working environment. While there is currently no known ongoing threat, the university encourages everyone to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
