LUGOFF, SC — Kershaw County Community Mourns the Loss of Stacey Shavone Anderson, 46, in Tragic Hit-and-Run
October 20, 2025 | Lugoff, South Carolina — A wave of grief has washed over the Kershaw County community as residents come to terms with the tragic death of Stacey Shavone Anderson, a 46-year-old woman described by friends and family as a loving mother, loyal friend, and dedicated community member. Stacey’s life was tragically cut short on Saturday night, October 18, when she was struck and killed in a hit-and-run incident near the intersection of U.S. Highway 601 and Porter Cross Road.
The fatal collision occurred around 9:40 p.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Emergency services responded to the scene quickly, but despite life-saving efforts, Anderson was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak and unanswered questions.
As of Monday, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, is actively investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet released a description of the suspect vehicle but are urging anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash — especially those with dashcam footage or surveillance cameras nearby — to come forward.
A Life Remembered
Stacey Shavone Anderson was a lifelong resident of Kershaw County, known throughout the Lugoff and Camden areas for her warmth, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her loved ones. She leaves behind two adult children and a large extended family who are now grappling with unimaginable grief.
“Stacey was the kind of person who never met a stranger,” said her sister, Regina Anderson. “She would give you her last dollar, a warm meal, or just sit with you when you needed a friend. Her heart was huge, and now there’s a hole in all of ours.”
A graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School, Anderson had worked for many years in the local healthcare field, providing in-home care for elderly patients. Her clients often described her as gentle, attentive, and compassionate — qualities that reflected her entire approach to life.
“She was a caregiver in every sense of the word,” said longtime friend Angela Boone. “Not just for work, but for everyone she met. Stacey was always checking in, always helping, always lifting people up.”
Neighbors in Lugoff say Stacey could often be seen walking along the very road where she lost her life — U.S. 601 — on her way to or from nearby homes and businesses. The intersection of U.S. 601 and Porter Cross Road, typically quiet after dark, is now the site of a growing memorial. Bouquets of flowers, handwritten notes, and candles mark the place where a life was taken far too soon.
Community Outrage and Call for Justice
The hit-and-run has stirred not only sorrow, but anger and frustration among community members, who are demanding justice for Stacey and safer conditions along the heavily traveled highway.
“This is not just a tragedy — it’s a crime,” said Pastor James Elliott of New Hope Baptist Church. “Someone left a woman to die in the street. That’s inhuman. We are calling on anyone with information to do the right thing.”
State troopers have confirmed that they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras. They are also asking local auto shops to be on the lookout for vehicles with recent front-end damage, which may indicate a connection to the crash.
“We are doing everything we can to locate the individual responsible for this fatal collision,” said Trooper David Gibson with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. “We urge the driver to come forward and take responsibility — and we urge anyone who may know something to speak up.”
A Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Service Planned
In the wake of her tragic passing, family and friends are organizing a candlelight vigil to honor Stacey’s life and call attention to the dangers pedestrians face along U.S. 601. The vigil will be held on Thursday, October 23, at 7 p.m., near the site of the crash. Community members are invited to bring candles, flowers, and share memories in tribute.
A public memorial service is being planned for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Chapel AME Church in Camden, where Stacey was a regular attendee and often volunteered during food drives and outreach events.
“We are going to remember her for her light, not the darkness of what happened,” said family friend and organizer Cheryl Mitchell. “Stacey deserves justice, but more than that, she deserves to be remembered as the woman she truly was — giving, strong, and full of love.”
