Two Hyannis Men Arrested in Connection with Early Morning Shooting of Local Woman

HYANNIS, MA – October 18, 2025 — A disturbing act of gun violence early Saturday morning has led to the arrest of two Hyannis men in connection with the shooting of a 28-year-old woman in downtown Hyannis. The incident, which unfolded at approximately 4:16 a.m. on October 18, resulted in a large-scale police response and an ongoing investigation that continues to shake the local community.

According to the Barnstable Police Department, officers responded to 174 Main Street after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a 28-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid until Hyannis Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene. The victim was quickly transported to Cape Cod Hospital and later airlifted by med flight to a Boston-area trauma center, where she is currently recovering. Police have confirmed that she is expected to survive.

Shortly after the shooting, a collaborative law enforcement effort was launched to track down the suspects. Based on evidence gathered during the early stages of the investigation, officers secured arrest warrants for two local men: 18-year-old Evan Araujo and 19-year-old Jacob Winbush, both of Hyannis.

In a coordinated operation, the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement SWAT Team, supported by the Barnstable Police Patrol Division and the Barnstable K-9 Unit, successfully located and took both suspects into custody. Their arrests took place within the 100 block of Main Street — the same area where the shooting occurred — which was cordoned off for several hours Saturday morning as police managed two active scenes and conducted a thorough sweep of the area.

Following the arrests, Barnstable Police detectives, working alongside patrol officers, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations, executed multiple search warrants aimed at securing key evidence related to the case.

Both Araujo and Winbush were booked at the Barnstable Police Department and are now facing a series of serious charges, including:

  • Assault to Murder, Armed with a Firearm

  • Assault and Battery with a Firearm

  • Discharging a Firearm Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling

  • Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card

In addition, Araujo is being held without bail due to a probation violation in addition to the new charges. Winbush is being held on $100,000 cash bail. Both are scheduled for arraignment in Barnstable District Court on Monday, October 20, 2025. The case will be prosecuted by the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators have indicated that this incident does not appear to be a random act, suggesting that the victim may have been known to the suspects. However, officials have not yet released details about a possible motive or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The scene of the incident — a busy stretch of Main Street between Center Street and Pleasant Street — remained closed to traffic for much of Saturday morning as police secured the area and collected forensic evidence. The swift closure of the scene, paired with the visible presence of SWAT personnel and heavily armed officers, left many residents and local business owners shaken.

Barnstable Police praised the quick and coordinated response by all involved agencies, emphasizing the importance of interdepartmental collaboration in high-risk situations like this one.

“This was a dangerous and fast-moving situation involving a violent act in a densely populated area,” a department spokesperson said. “Thanks to the professionalism and coordination between multiple law enforcement units, we were able to apprehend two suspects quickly and begin gathering crucial evidence to support the prosecution.”

As the victim continues to recover, her identity has not been released, in accordance with privacy laws. Community leaders are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

This shooting adds to growing concerns about rising incidents of gun violence in the region. Local officials have vowed to take further steps to address public safety and work with community organizations to prevent further violence.
