Tragedy in Coconut Grove: Wednesday Evening Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Injured
MIAMI — A quiet Wednesday evening in Coconut Grove, one of Miami’s most historic and vibrant neighborhoods, was shattered by gunfire, leaving one man dead and another injured in a harrowing act of violence that has stunned the local community.
The incident unfolded just after 7 p.m. near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road, a well-trafficked area typically buzzing with activity from local shops, restaurants, and pedestrians. Miami Police responded swiftly to reports of shots fired, and upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a man lying on the pavement suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was later identified as 30-year-old Robert Denardes Whittle Jr., a Coconut Grove resident known to many in the community. First responders attempted life-saving measures on-site before Whittle was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A second individual, whose name has not yet been released, was also found injured nearby with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive. Investigators have not confirmed whether the two victims knew each other or if the second man was an unintended target.
Community in Shock
The shooting has sent ripples of grief and fear through Coconut Grove, a neighborhood known for its rich cultural history and tightly knit community. Long-time residents and business owners expressed shock and concern over the violent outburst.

“Robert had a big heart and always tried to lift others up,” said a longtime friend. “He didn’t deserve this. No one does.”
An impromptu memorial has begun forming near the site of the shooting, with candles, flowers, and handwritten messages left by mourners.
