October 16, 2025 | Buckingham County, Virginia

A tragic single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 59-year-old Dillwyn man on Wednesday evening, according to the Virginia State Police.

The driver, identified as John J. Jamerson, Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred in Buckingham County, though authorities have not yet released the exact location pending further investigation.

According to a statement released Thursday by a Virginia State Police spokesperson, Jamerson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

The Incident

Police say the crash occurred during the early evening hours on Wednesday, October 15, when Jamerson was traveling alone in his vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed. No other vehicles were involved, and no passengers were reported to be in the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash was reported but were unable to revive Jamerson. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

The crash is being investigated as a single-vehicle fatality, and investigators are working to determine whether speed, weather, road conditions, or any form of impairment may have been contributing factors.

A Life Remembered

John J. Jamerson, Jr., a lifelong resident of Dillwyn, was well-known in his community for his friendly demeanor and strong work ethic. Friends and neighbors described him as a down-to-earth individual who enjoyed simple pleasures and valued his family and community.

“He was always willing to lend a hand,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named. “Whether it was helping you fix something around the house or just being there to chat—he was a good man.”

As word of his passing spread, tributes began to appear on local social media pages and community forums, with many remembering him as a familiar and friendly face around town.

A Reminder on Road Safety

While the crash remains under investigation, law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of wearing seatbelts—regardless of how short or familiar the drive may be.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder that seatbelt use can be the difference between life and death,” the VSP spokesperson said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Jamerson during this difficult time.”

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, more than 300 unrestrained drivers and passengers were killed in crashes in the state last year. Safety officials continue to urge all drivers and occupants to buckle up every time they are in a vehicle.

Investigation Ongoing

Virginia State Police say the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Once completed, a full report will be submitted to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review, which is standard protocol in fatal crash cases.

No foul play is suspected at this time.

Final Arrangements

Funeral arrangements for John J. Jamerson, Jr. will be announced by the family in the coming days. The community of Dillwyn and greater Buckingham County mourns the sudden and unexpected loss of a neighbor, friend, and loved one.

Editor’s Note: This story will be updated as more information becomes available from law enforcement and the Jamerson family. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is asked to contact the Virginia State Police Division Three office.
